$1,000 WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP
$1,500 LIMIT HOLD'EM SHOOTOUT
:

"The Bottom Lines"
By Andrew N.S. Glazer

Due to the World Series making a late switch of the $1,500 Limit Hold'em Shootout to a one day event instead of two (and as a result, a final table that ended about 6:00 a.m.), and due to a combination of a desire for rest and my views about the insulting nature of a Woman's Tournament (if you aren't familiar with those, read my report from yesterday about Jennifer Harman Traniello's victory in the $5,000 Limit Hold'em Championship, as well as some notes below), today's report will be a simple recap of the final results in those two events.

A hold'em "shootout" varies from a typical elimination tournament in that it's a tiered system. 193 players entered, which meant that we started with 20 tables. Each of those tables played down to a single winner, each of whom was now "in the money." Those 20 winners played two ten player tables, where you had to survive into the final five to make the tournament's final table.

AND FOR THE LADIES, WHO AT LEAST HAVE TURNED INTO WOMEN

I guess some progress is being made: traditionally, this tournament had been called the Ladies Championship, but recently has become the Women's Championship. It's a $1,000 entry fee event, played half hold'em and half seven-card stud, in alternating rounds.

Don't get me wrong when I "dis" the Women's Championship: winning any thousand dollar entry tournament against 106 opponents is a worthy accomplishment, and the feeling of disappointment when one gets knocked out no less miserable than in any other event, news I have on first hand authority from my good friend Sharon Fann, who got knocked out ninth. It's just that while I believe that Women's Tournaments play an important role in the poker world to bring women into poker in the first place (because they don't commonly get the high school "male bonding" introduction that men get), they aren't necessary once you get to the major league level of the World Series, I think it's an insult to women to offer a "handicap" event that excludes 90% of the world's best players.

I'm not alone in this belief. Most (but not all) of the world's top women players choose not to play in the Woman's Championship. I don't blame the top women who chose to play it. If I had a chance to play in a $1,000 entry tournament where I knew I wouldn't have to face an extremely strong field, I'd probably think it was a smart financial decision to enter.
