AND FOR THE LADIES, WHO AT LEAST HAVE TURNED INTO WOMEN I guess some progress is being made: traditionally, this tournament had been called the Ladies Championship, but recently has become the Women's Championship. It's a $1,000 entry fee event, played half hold'em and half seven-card stud, in alternating rounds. Don't get me wrong when I "dis" the Women's Championship: winning any thousand dollar entry tournament against 106 opponents is a worthy accomplishment, and the feeling of disappointment when one gets knocked out no less miserable than in any other event, news I have on first hand authority from my good friend Sharon Fann, who got knocked out ninth. It's just that while I believe that Women's Tournaments play an important role in the poker world to bring women into poker in the first place (because they don't commonly get the high school "male bonding" introduction that men get), they aren't necessary once you get to the major league level of the World Series, I think it's an insult to women to offer a "handicap" event that excludes 90% of the world's best players. I'm not alone in this belief. Most (but not all) of the world's top women players choose not to play in the Woman's Championship. I don't blame the top women who chose to play it. If I had a chance to play in a $1,000 entry tournament where I knew I wouldn't have to face an extremely strong field, I'd probably think it was a smart financial decision to enter.
