Subject: World Poker Open - Day 18 From: lvdlrs Newsgroups: rec.gambling.poker Date: Wed, Jan 23, 2002 12:25 AM Message-ID: <3C4E7429.A1273457@midsouth.rr.com> Today was the final table of the $2000 No Limit Holdem. Doyle Brunson started the day with the third most chips. He finished fourth. One hand about an hour into the session I remember well. Tony Popejoy made it $6,000 and Doyle reading him well came over the top with $20,000. Tony thought a bit and then called the rest of his stack (maybe 20,000 more?) and Doyle called. Both turned over their hands. Doyle had pocket 8's. Tony had the hand that's been discussed to death here on this forum, A-J offsuit. Tony Popejoy made the cardinal sin of coming over the top of Doyle's raise being either a huge dog or a small dog. He couldn't have possibly thought he had any chance of being the favorite in that spot. He got lucky and flopped a Jack with no 8 and of course no 8 on fourth or fifth street. He could have so easily been sent to the rail. Instead he became the chip leader. He did pretty well with those chips as he finished first and pocketed $107,864. The booboo of the day. As I was going over to give Galen Lester his $10,000 entry receipt after winning a single table satellite, Capt Tom at the same table asked me to go over and register he and his wife for the super satellite. After doing so and returning with his receipts he looked at the name on them and said that his name wasn't on the twenty but rather the one on the $100 bill he held up for me to read. I'd put Tom and Sheree Jackson on the receipt and of course it should have been Tom and Sheree Franklin. Oops. How many shades of red did I turn I wonder. A few for sure. The $330 Limit Holdem had 212 entries and 296 rebuys. That's a $152,400 prize pool for a $300 entry tournament. How we stack up to last years tournament. All the info is in on the tournaments, excluding the final of course. This year we had 122 less entries than last year. But the overall prize pool of $2,729,000 is up $353,000 over that of last years $2,376,000. Live action doesn't match up to that of last years though we were really really close at one point last week. All in all, it's been a great tournament and can only get better. Next up, the Championship Event. I sure do envy not being one of the entrants. This is what poker is all about, this event. Gary (G-man) Philips
