Subject: World Poker Open - Day 6 From: lvdlrs Newsgroups: rec.gambling.poker Date: Fri, Jan 11, 2002 1:32 AM Message-ID: <3C3ECFE8.BB729F0D@midsouth.rr.com> I walked into the dealer break room today and saw four or five day shift dealers relaxing. The thing most remarkable to me was that they were smiling, all of them. Six days into the tournament and still smiling. We have to be doing something right. One of them asked how we were going to expand our tournament space to accomodate next years growth. Good question I thought. But what a nice problem to have. One notable personality seen was Scotty Nguyen. Yep Scotty's here. I understand he went out the Beale Street in Memphis tonight. I've never been there at night and made a mental note to do so after the World Poker Open is over. Would have walked right pass Dewey Weum if he hadn't spoke to me directly. Nice to have a conversation with someone that doesn't involve a food comp. Dewey's a great guy and I like him a lot. Saw the other Dewey too, Dewey Tomko. I wonder if there was ever a final table that included Weum, Tomko and Ungar. Dewey, Dewey and Stuey. Sounds like a law firm. Also in attendance was Dr Max Stern and his always gracious, smiling wife Maria. Ken Skyhawk Flayton showed up here today also. Seems like everyone is here and the amazing thing is they are all happy to be here too. Here's a come on this didn't really happen story. A player who will go nameless mailed in a $10,000 check to cover the entry for our final event and couldn't understand why we hadn't received it. He eventually got the letter returned to him and the reason was he forgot to stick a 34 cent stamp on it. Ripley's you listening? Thanks for reading. It's been a long day. It amazes me how much intensity this tournament places on it's workers and yet how well they handle it. The staff here is great. I'd go to bat for any one of them, and that includes the temporary hires. Don't believe me? Come on down to the Gold Strike/Horseshoe World Poker Open and see for yourself. Gary (...) Philips
