Date: Thu, 9 Jun 2005 23:00:06 -0700 From: Charles Haynes Subject: [Target] How I spent my summer vacation Entered the $1500 NL, played poorly, busted early. Played the $220 satellite I was nominally in LV for. Was the first out. (It was a bad beat but I'm not going to tell the story because [1] I hate listening to bad beat stories and [2] it wasn't all that memorable, I was a 4:1 favorite and he got lucky. It happens, that's poker.) Played the $1500 Limit event, went out about 150-160 something like that. At my table, at various times I had Huck Seed, Men Nguyen, and a couple other final table faces whose names I'm embarrassed to admit that I've forgotten. Highlight of the tourney for me was a confrontation with Men (I've played against him before, he was three to my left this time, which I hated.) This occurred sometime in round 4-5. I have a slightly above average stack, he has a bigger stack. I think the stack sizes were something like T$3000 for me and T$4500 for him. Men open raises UTG. Folded to me on the button. I re-raise. The blinds fold. He calls. Flop comes Q J T two suited. He bets. I raise. He re-raises. I four bet it. He thinks... checks my stack size, thinks some more... checks my stack size, thinks some more... then calls. I never ever pay attention to how fast or slow he bets or calls or anything he does or says pre-action. All that matters is what he does, everything else is Hollywood. Turn Q. He checks. I bet. He calls. River blank. (I think it was a 7.) He checks. I bet. He raises. I re-raise. (This leaves me with about 1 BB if I recall.) He calls. He has AJ. I have KK. He's crippled and goes out about a round later. I think I played the $1500 fairly well, though I went out by overplaying a hand I could have waited on. Sigh.
