Date: Tue, 4 May 2004 15:54:01 -0700 (PDT) From: Ken Kubey Subject: [Target] TARGET 2004 Report Hi all, Here it is. The official 2004 Report. The 11th TARGET event was held at the Mirage. Thursday, 4/29. About 20 of us met for brunch. Ed Fernandez brought the lammers for TARGET and saved me a trip to Binion's. Thanks Ed. Ed and Jeff sat with Sandi and me at brunch. Richard White was the TD again. Donna Harris helped set up the tournament. Again we used Patrick Milligan Tournament Timer. Thanks to Barry Tanenbaum for bringing his laptop and getting it all set up. I also want to thank Dan Sammartino for printing up a poster for TARGET 2004. That was a nice touch. We played on a Thursday for the first time in TARGET history, but still managed a respectable 22 players at post time. This was the first all-male TARGET since 1996. The tables: Will Wong Chuck Weinstock Mark Trombley Ed Fernandez Ray Klann Barry Tanenbaum ----------- Paul Westley Keith Bronson Cliff Mathews Tony Goldstein Dan Sammartino Roger Park Andy Latto ----------- Charles Haynes Jerry Gerner Russ Fox Ken Kubey Peter Secor Jeffrey Siegal Chuck Emerling Bob Blaeser Shawn Lauderdale Charles Haynes showed up late. We were all impressed with his tight play :-) Ed Fernandez was the first to be knocked out. Charles raised to 250, Ed jammed with AK. Charles called pretty quickly with AQ. At the turn, the board had a two 9's and 8 and some other card. Charles called for an 8 to split the pot. Instead, the river was a queen. Ed got a $10 Mirage coin, a roll of Lifesavers and a bag of goldfish. Jeff Siegal was the 2nd out. This is noteworthy in that Jeff has played in TARGET 5 times and this is the *first* time that Jeff has *ever* busted out of TARGET. The record is 11, held by yours truly :-) Keith was 3rd out. Keith won a super-sat and will be playing in the $10,000 event! Good luck Keith! I had no cards at all early. I tried a steal raise and ran into Tony's AA and had to fold to his re-raise. I finally found a decent hand (JJ) and called all-in for 2 chips. I was once again up against Tony who had AQo. Main pot was 7 chips. Flop came J-high, all clubs. Tony had no clubs. Cool! Turn club. Tony says "club, club, club" River club. Split the pot. He gets the extra chip. Arrrgghhhh. Peter and Chuck Emerling played an interesting hand. All the money went in. Peter AQ. Chuck 55. Flop 9-9-X. Turn 8. Chuck says "No eight." River 8. Poker Gods are just plain mean. Send the pot to Peter. Someone went out in 11th and the final table was set: Peter Secor 2700 Jerry Gerner 6400 Russ Fox 300 Dan Sammartino 2900 Will Wong 3500 Charles Haynes 5600 Andy Latto 7300 Chuck Weinstock 9800 Mark Trombley 2900 Ray Klann 2700 Russ Fox was the only 2003 final table member to make the final table in 2004. First and Second get 3 $500 lammers. 3rd $500. 4th $305. 5th $80 (late fees) Mark Trombley was the first out at the final table when his QQ went up against Jerry's JJ. Jerry flopped quad jacks! Just to add insult, the turn card was a queen to give Mark a full house. I forgot to write down the river card. Someone said "Not a queen." Jerry continued his role as the terminator taking out Russ Fox and Ray Klann at the same time. Russ had AQ, Ray JJ, Jerry QQ. This time the queens held up and Russ was out in 9th, Ray in 8th. Dan Sammartino's AQ was next to take on Jerry with AT. The board came out T-2-2-X-7 and that was all for Dan. ARG rookie Will Wong made a good showing and went all-in with QJ against Andy's T3. I think Andy was forced to play in the BB or only had to call a chip or two. The flop was all small cards. The turn was a T giving Andy the lead. Just to be sure, the river was also a T sending Will to the rail in 6th place. Way before TARGET, Will asked if his wife could come along to brunch. I said sure. On my list of brunch attendees, I typed in "Will Wong Wife" Try saying that three times fast :-) Charles made a stand with AT. Chuck called with JJ. A jack on the turn sealed the win for Mr. Weinstock. Charles did "win" $80 for his 5th place finish. Next came the battle of BARGE organizers. Peter Secor with AJ. Chuck with A9. The board came out 9-8-5-X-X and Peter had petered out in 4th place, but picked up $305. Down to three players. Chuck and Jerry had the big stacks. Andy still had some chips. As is typical of TARGET, the action slowed to a crawl 3-handed with the serious money on the line. This first big hand had Andy jamming with K2s and Jerry calling pretty quickly with KJs. The flop was A-5-4 keeping Jerry in the lead, but giving Andy 7 outs instead of 3. A deuce on the turn doubled Andy through. A king came on the river just for fun. Later Jerry got revenge with T4s against Andy's 66 with a T-high flop. Chuck took the chip lead with KJ against Andy's K2. The board came out Q-7-7-7-J. 13 minutes into round 7, the end came. Jerry jammed with 44. Chuck made a big stack call with Q9. Chuck flopped the nut straight. The board paired on the turn giving Jerry one last shot, but a blank on the river ended the tournament. Jerry was understandably disappointed to finish third, but did take home $500 for his valiant effort. Jerry also added $20 to the dealer toke pool. Someone else threw in an extra $5 too. I build the dealer toke into the TARGET structure so it was not necessary for people to add extra tips, but they are appreciated. Congratulations to Chuck Weinstock and Andy Latto! They each received $1500 in lammers and both played in the $1500 no-limit event the following day. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Craps tour. We watched the 9:00 Fremont St. show and then grabbed one end of a $10 craps table. I was joined by Chuck W., Perry Friedman, Ray Klann, Dan Sammartino and Shawn Lauderdale. Michael Hunter also made a couple of cameo appearances and gave me a really cool chip from a casino in Parumph! Chuck bought in, but didn't play. He was nice enough to stick around for a while anyway. Ray, Dan and Shawn (sounds like a musical group) were all playing from the dark side. Perry was mostly spectating, but would occasionally make some bets. Some very funny (and often old) jokes were told. We were laughing and having a good time. T.J. Cloutier made a short appearance and shot the dice. Craps, craps, point, point made, point, 7 out. Get back to the poker table T.J. I was playing a very conservative game betting just $10 or $20 per roll while Ray, Dan and Shawn were betting anywhere from $25 to $250 a throw. Dan wasn't quite as crazy as the others. The table was choppy, but then got on a little pass streak. Playing the part of Jaeger was Shawn Lauderdale. Shawn lost $800 and called it a night. Ray lost $300. A lot of it while rolling the dice himself. Dan managed to get away with only a $50 loss. I'm not sure how Perry did. I won $60. BTW, don't feel too bad for Shawn. He placed the the $1500 event and won $5700. Way to go Shawn!!! This guy is going to love BARGE. I believe Perry also made the money. I hope we will get more pass line bettors next time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ $1500 event. Andy re-raised the JJ during the 2nd round. The flop came 9-8-5 with two of a suit. Other player checked to Andy. He didn't want to give a cheap/free card so he went all-in. His opponent had pocket kings and called. No jack. That was all for Andy. Chuck made it into the 3rd hour having doubled his stack earlier. Two players limped ahead of Chuck. He also limped along with AJs. The flop came J-X-Y. Chuck bet and was check-raised by the BB. The turn was a T. The BB checked to Chuck. He jammed. The BB called with JT. Ouch. Turned out the BB was David Plastik. Chuck shook his hand. I also played in the event. I finished in 98th place out of 831 players. 81 places paid. A longer report is in the works. Oh well. There's always next year. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Thanks to everyone who played in TARGET and a big Thanks to all of the folks that sent checks in early. That really helps me a lot. I'll be sending out a survey soon. I hope everyone had a good time during the TARGET weekend. TARGET will be held in April or May again next year.
