From: kubey@summit.engr.sgi.com (Ken Kubey) To: target@conjelco.com Subject: [Target] 2003 Report Date: Wed, 23 Apr 2003 13:15:11 -0700 (PDT) Hi all, Here it is. The official 2003 Report. The 10th TARGET event was held at the Mirage. Saturday, 4/18. About 12 of us met for brunch. Charles and Debbie Ann joined me at the small table. Thanks. Jeff Siegal brought the lammers for TARGET and saved me a trip to Binion's. Thanks Jeff. Richard White is again the TD. Donna Harris helped set up the tournament. Again we used Patrick Milligan Tournament Timer. Thanks to Patti Beadles who brought her brand new laptop to run Patrick's software. Everything went fine once I figured out to use the "Function" key to make "Page Down" do the right thing. Contact Patrick if you are interested in learning more about it. You can get a free copy for RGP events. The field was small this year. Why? Easter? Friday? Becky? Economy? Fear of Flying? Anyway, we made it to 20 players at post time. The tables: ----------- Jim Geary Tony Goldstein Ed Fernandez Ross Poppel Ken Heck Charles Haynes John Davis Andy Latto Stephen Landrum Russ Fox Jeff Siegal George Wattman Jerry Gerner Mark Sadausky Jim Sokoloff Nate Hess Patti Beadles Sabyl Cohen Ken Kubey Gary Furness Patti was the first of many to be knocked out by Jeff. I didn't witness the hand, but it was Jeff with ATs against Patti's AQ. Flop A-J-X. Turn Q picking up Jeff's flush draw and straight draw, but giving Patti two pair. Jeff hit the flush. Patti got a $10 Mirage coin and a stuffed musical fish. He plays "It's a Small World" when you squeeze him. I played poorly. I made one nice check-raise early and stole the blinds a few times. I raised with 88, 55, and K9s. and folded all three to all-in raises behind me. The 55 fold was almost certainly correct, but the other two were debatable, but probably bad folds. I finally pushed all-in with A6 and lost to Ross' BB Q8. Oh well. Someone went out in 10th and the final table was set: Sabyl Cohen 7100 John Davis 2300 Stephen Landrum 6000 Gary Furness 1500 Jim Sokoloff 4400 Russ Fox 2400 Jeff Siegal 7900 Ross Poppel 7000 George Wattman 1400 Russ Fox was the only 2002 final table member to make the final table in 2003. First gets 4 $500 lammers. 2nd $599. 3rd $350. 4th $285. 5th 225. 6th $60. $60? Yeah, we had some late fees added to the prize pool. After a little discussion, I had enough support to give the bubble spot a little cash. A couple of players argued about this. "You like making the money, but showing a loss?" "Better to get $60 than nothing." I can see both sides. George raised in early position with KK. Sabyl had a much bigger stack and called with As9s. Flop Jh-4h-4x. Turn Xh giving George a flush draw. River Ac. Ouch. George is out in 9th. John made a move with KJ, Jeff called him with AQ. Board A-T-X-Y-Z. Mr. Davis didn't catch a queen and went out in 8th. Gary Furness (SCATS winner) found AQs and caught Stephen stealing with K8o. The flop missed them both, but Gary was K-O'd by a K on the turn. Down to six players, the action slowed way down. The small stacks always survived and there were no huge confrontations for quite a while. I think we were 6-handed for a good 20 minutes. Ross and Jeff got all the chips in pre-flop. Ross only had QT, but was way ahead of Jeff's 54s. At the turn, Ross was still ahead and had picked up a flush draw too. But Jeff had picked up an open-end straight draw and a non-spade 6 sent Ross packing in 6th. The rest of the tournament took about 18 seconds. That's sure what it seemed like. Anyway, back to the action... Jeff caught Stephen stealing with 98s. Jeff had A5s. Flop Q-J-J leaving Steve with 10 outs. A low diamond picked up Jeff's flush draw and took away more outs. The river ace put Mr. Landrum out in 5th. Jim Geary was getting low on chips. He finally called all-in with 43o in the BB agaisnt Sabyl's 7c6c. Jim flopped a straight draw then instantly realized that the flop was all clubs and that Sabyl had flushed him out of the tournament. Russ Fox must be part Cat as he seemed to have 9 lives surviving all-in after all-in. Still, his A4 was no match for Jeff's AK. K on the flop. It's good to be the king. Russ ran 3rd for the 2nd year in a row. Not a bad showing. Get it? 3rd? Show? (horse racing reference). Fox? Cat? Horse? Okay, enough with the animals already. Sabyl took the chip lead briefly. Jeff's requirement for pushing all-in appeared to have narrowed to "two cards". Jeff pushed in again and Sabyl called wth QJo. Jeff had a real hand. A pair of 10's. But that left Sabyl with plenty of outs. No Q's or J's came and Mr. Siegal was back in the driver's seat. Sabyl flopped another flush in here somewhere to stem the tide a bit. Getting low on chips, Sabyl pushed a T6s. Jeff was happy to get in there with AQ. The flop came down Q-Q-T. Gotta make quads to win this hand, Sabyl. But it was Jeff that won the tornament in style with the 4th queen on the river. Jeff has played in TARGET 4 times and has won the top prize all 4 times. What a record! I very nearly forgot to toke the dealers a the end. We gave the dealers $140. I see now that it was supposed to be $141. Well, Russ tipped them about $10 50 cents at a time. I guess they won't sue. I'll add $1 from my pocket next year. Congratulations to Jeff! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Those of us not already playing poker headed over to the California Pizza Kitchen for dinner after the tournament. I highly recommend the "Wild Mushroom" pizza. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The craps tour consisted of Russ and me wandering from casino to casino. I beat the big wheel for $1. Russ went back to play poker. I blew $150 playing craps at Binion's. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Jeff played in the $2000 NLH event. He had AA on the first hand, but could only win a small pot. He doubled up later, but then started drifting back toward an average stack. He lost a key hand about 3 hours in with KK against TT. The flop came T-high and no cowboy came to the rescue. Oh well. There's always next year. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Thanks to everyone who played in TARGET and a big Thanks to all of the folks that sent checks in early. That really helps me a lot. This year's TARGET went pretty smoothly. It was a rather quiet event this time around due to the small field. I have an idea for next year that will either kill the event completely or make it a lot more fun. We'll see. Thanks again to Patrick for letting us use his timer. It worked very well. I'll be sending out a survey soon. I hope everyone had a good time during the TARGET weekend. TARGET will be held in April or May again next year assuming that there is still a WSOP and assuming that we get enough players.
