Date: Tue, 4 Aug 2015 10:36:49 -0500 From: "C. Meck" Subject: [BARGE] 2015 BARGE Trip Report (Part 1) This is very lengthy, full of Youtube clips, and has several more parts. Or, tl;dr (too long; didn't read) *2015 BARGE Part 1* *None of This Took Place in Nevada* So Scott Samarel got me to change my plans from flying to Vegas on Wednesday of BARGE week to fly in to L.A. on Saturday to go to the Phish concert. I drove to Nashville on pre-BARGE Friday and indulged in the hot chicken at Prince=E2=80=99s again. Hot chicken is a Nashville specialty=E2= =80=94basically a secret mix of spices is added to the breading before the chicken is fried in a skillet. It supposedly originated at this place Prince=E2=80=99s back= in the 1940s. This guy Prince was a =E2=80=9Cladies man=E2=80=9D and his wife dec= ided to exact some revenge by making his fried chicken WAY too spicy, but he loved danger and loved the super spicy chicken. Prince=E2=80=99s is in a bad neighborho= od, has no ambience and crappy service but I like it. I kicked it up from =E2=80= =9Cmedium=E2=80=9D to =E2=80=9Chot=E2=80=9D (they won=E2=80=99t even serve you the XXHot unles= s you are a regular and you are insane). https://youtu.be/72xXxV9qIPg It=E2=80=99s a bit rough on the digestive tract; you could be reminded of = a certain Johnny Cash track (and it burns, burns, burns=E2=80=A6) on your nex= t trip or two to the restroom. https://youtu.be/It7107ELQvY Fly from Nashville to LAX on Saturday. Terrible breakfast in Nashville airport at =E2=80=9CNoshville=E2=80=9D, a deli that would make all of you E= ast Coasters cry. I thought I was going to have no one in middle seat on virtually full flight, but last people on were a dad with young son. Flight attendants asked for a volunteer so they could sit together=E2=80=94I agreed and middl= e seated myself in exchange for free drinks on the flight. Consumed several Fat Tire units as I am ensconced in #5E on that Southwest flight. Goldie picked me up at LAX. We ended up at Mark =E2=80=9CThe Occupant=E2= =80=9D Gilutin=E2=80=99s place for a few hours. We got some burgers to go from this place =E2=80=9C= Grill =E2=80=98Em All=E2=80=9D that seemed to have a heavy metal theme. All of th= e burgers were named after heavy metal bands or songs. I got the =E2=80=9CPowerslave=E2= =80=9D mainly because Iron Maiden=E2=80=99s a good metal band; the burger had field green= s, brie cheese, bourbon apple compote, and balsamic aioli, all of which makes me think of the NWOBHM. https://youtu.be/xqUa5SbLU_c Burger was good and several of us played a few quick table-top board games (and Kai Landrum played with his =E2=80=9CKai-pad=E2=80=9D). Five of us (Goldie, Scott, Jeff, JRX, I) ended up in Inglewood at the forum for the show. We ran hot in getting a great parking spot (close to our seat and right by the exit for a super-fast and clean getaway after the show). Jeff and I got some chicken tacos there, along with many beers. Find our seats and there=E2=80=99s this crazy young woman just out of her m= ind on drugs in the row ahead of us, yelling obscenities and just overall unpleasant to be around. Fortunately she was hauled off by her exasperated boyfriend and we could enjoy the show. Great show=E2=80=94my 5th Phish sh= ow. Unusual set list and I maintained my 100% record of always getting =E2=80=9CTweezer=E2=80=9D at my shows. https://youtu.be/iAMAeuIax5E It was Deadhead Goldie=E2=80=99s first Phish show (he has close to 100 Dead= shows) and I think he was impressed by how tight Phish is as a band. No covers=E2= =80=94I was secretly hoping for some 2pac or Dr. Dre since Inglewood is always up to no good. https://youtu.be/4SFdI2ejaGw?t=3D4m17s After the show end up at the Commerce Casino and Scott & I play for a few hours. I=E2=80=99m super tired and drunk et cetera so I just sit in some $= 4/$8 limit holdem and my first Cali poker session was awinner, as I booked that 0.75 big bet win! https://youtu.be/7qovGCcLW8o Maybe I should have played that $40 =E2=80=9Cno-limit=E2=80=9D game. The d= irty South laughs at people playing NL buying in with $20s. I like these badasses angrily slamming down a stack of $1 chips like they are high rollers. I spent the night at Scott=E2=80=99s. We got up and had lunch at Costa=E2= =80=99s, a diner near his place. I had some sort of lamb special that was filling and OK but not a foodie moment. We then drove to Hawaiian Garden casino so I could experience more Cali poker. Cali poker is so weird. Chips are stupid colors and they steal way too much money before the fucking flop and the poker culture just seems a bit different compared to Vegas/Midwest/South that I=E2=80=99m used to. I ask for a bottle of water = and that=E2=80=99s not free and I can=E2=80=99t even get it from the same perso= n that will bring me free coffee. WTF? Aside: I love how people in California describe how far it is from X to Y in terms of =E2=80=9CZ minutes without traffic=E2=80=9D. When the fuck is t= here no traffic? (Aside to aside: I drive to work on country roads where the main impediment is roadkill and the occasional tractor during the harvest). We listen to some Phish and some other jam band stuff in Scott=E2=80=99s car as he (like= all So-Cal folk) is a slave, slave to the traffic. https://youtu.be/r9kVrTpjS_U Scott and I got on the $6/$12 OE w/full kill list. They started a second table shortly afterwards. It was must-move and I got moved first. Scott told me that the #7 and #8 seats were action players, which spared me the 5 minutes it was going to take to figure that out. Seat #7 was a call station and Seat #8 was a maniac. Scott got moved to this table as well and over the next several hours I lost several hundred dollars, mostly to #7 and #8. It was a great game, send more money. Seriously, I=E2=80=99d play poker with those two every day= for the rest of my life, but they were fish on heaters today. Seat #8 had like 6 racks of green $2 chips. Some other funny characters in the game=E2=80=94= Scott seemed to know most of them. There was the nitty Filipino-Polish guy, a couple of card throwers, and crabby old guy next to Scott that told Seat #8 =E2=80=9CEither you have a printing press for money or SHIT FER BRAINZ=E2= =80=9D. LOL Cali split pot regulars are such friendly people that fit so well into polite society! https://youtu.be/KkrOeTKWyIg Had dinner at table (I had Thai fried rice, decent enough for casino food) and then Scott and I spent night at Kyle Minnis=E2=80=99s house, as Scott i= s driving Kyle=E2=80=99s van into Vegas. Get on road late, eat lunch at place called Vince=E2=80=99s Spaghetti=E2=80=94old schoo= l. Scott gets the portion for =E2=80=9Chearty eaters=E2=80=9D (i.e. a shit-ton of spaghet= ti and meat sauce), I get smaller portion, Kyle gets meatball sandwich. Eventually get on the road and Scott makes much better time than a non-California grandpa driver like me would have made. After such highlights along the way as the world=E2=80=99s tallest thermometer, we hit= Primm around 7 PM. The NLHE bounty tournament is starting at 7:30. I text and get Ron to buy me in (I hadn=E2=80=99t signed up since I wasn=E2=80=99t ori= ginally going to be there until Wednesday). We pass Jean and approach the the city that was the inspiration of a certain Elvis song: as the bright light city gonna set my soul on fire, we got a whole lot of money that=E2=80=99s ready to burn, = and we drop off the van in 4Q valet and rush over. This theme gets more pronounced later in the week.) #1 Me #2 Doug Grismore #3 Kyle Minnis (arriving with me) #4 Kenny Shei, then ? #5 Steve Markowitz #6 Linda Lewis #7 Wendy Freedman #8 ?, then Bob Herlien #9 Rick Momborquette I was pretty efficient and busted quickly, as my 3-bet jam failed to get Wendy to fold the best hand and I fail to get there with my dominated ace-rag. Alex, Kenny, and I then went to Raku for foodie bliss. Japanese small plates=E2=80=94too much to try to list everything, but various skewers and = parts of fish, chickens, pigs, and cows, along with a bit of uni and a bit of greens and the best fucking tofu I ever had in my life. Pro tip: the fresh tofu there is wonderful and much better than the deep-fried tofu (the opposite of what I expected). If you think you hate tofu, it=E2=80=99s because thos= e tasteless blocks of slimy white blah they sell at your supermarket suck. I got my buy-in back essentially when Kenny =E2=80=9Cwins=E2=80=9D at CCR (cr= edit card roulette). https://youtu.be/b5NBMh6rftc I didn=E2=80=99t make it to Lotus of Siam this trip, but many of you did an= d got that northern Thai greatness. You can get decent pad thai at home (even if home is small town Kentucky), but you don=E2=80=99t get this much if you li= ve in middle America. https://youtu.be/qMT-npz4lM0 On watching that clip, I should punch myself in the face for not going to Lotus. And don=E2=80=99t let Jimmy Fricke mislead you into thinking Chada = is better. Chada=E2=80=99s great, but http://jimmyeatsvegas.com/chada-thai/ i= s just wrong here. On return, get my bags from Kyle=E2=80=99s room and get into a room at the = Downtown Grand that I am staying in. Hadn=E2=80=99t been there before, nice place. = Sit in some $3/$6 dealers choice with Kevin Un and Stevie Lowball and Arthur and a few locals, then Alex and Kenny come in from the other game when it breaks and juice up the game. Lose $75 in that game as that=E2=80=99s a theme for= me this year in anything related to poker that=E2=80=99s not a $1/$3 NL cash game. Now it is Tuesday, 25 game mixed tournament. Brunch: With Ron Grossberg (my roomie) at the S & O restaurant in the Grand (we split our stay between the Grand and The D, a step up from 4Q and Boyd properties IMO). I had a much better corned beef hash than the crap served to me at the =E2=80=9CNoshville=E2=80=9D =E2=80=9Cdeli=E2=80=9D in the Nash= ville airport. Dinner: Pizza Rock with Dan Goldman, Jeff Dietch, Doug Grismore, Sean Morrow, and all the Landrums (Sabyl, Steve, Kai). I like pizza. Breakfast (I tend to eat breakfast during BARGE in the middle of the night the way some people will wash their hair before retiring): Claimjumper in Nugget with Doug, David Low, Rich Bremer. I don=E2=80=99t remember what I = had, probably just typical breakfast food. Pre-tournament cash game: I played $1/$3 NL briefly, then $3/$6 limit holdem, spewed -$130 for session. 25 Gameament: I=E2=80=99m playing since I=E2=80=99m in town early rather t= han the originally planned Wednesday. Thanks to Scott for getting me to come to Cali for Phish and getting me from LA to Vegas. Sorry, I didn=E2=80=99t write down my table draw and can=E2=80=99t remember= who I started with. I do remember my table was first or second to break. I don=E2=80=99t know whose idea it was have an official =E2=80=9Ctable capt= ain=E2=80=9D and a rulebook at each table, but it was genius. Probably Paul Campbell. I=E2= =80=99m sure he=E2=80=99d never try this tournament with a typical tournament crowd= =E2=80=94the local miserable limit tournament regulars are bad enough for O/8 and HORSE. Shout out to Luke Johnston, a white shirt dealer (he deals at WSOP as well) that was the only dealer I saw that never needed the table captain or rulebook no matter what game it was. He shouldn=E2=80=99t be wasting his t= alents at the Rio dealing the $235 Daily Deepstacks (although from his point of view it=E2=80=99s probably easier and equally profitable). The final table was: #1 David Lawful, #2 Sean McGuinness, #3 Doug Grismore, #4 Rich Strauss, #5 me, #6 Paul McMullin Key hands along the way for me: Stud/8: Make wheel on 7th (had 7 low) to river Warren Sander and others in big pot. 5 Card Draw: Dan Goldman, raise flush draw, we both draw 1, he leads, I raise (caught joker), he had straight. He wisely did not continue the betting war. Limit Holdem=E2=80=94Win pot against Wendy with A3 on a K river that looked= bad for her and good for me to represent. Stud Hi-Lo NO Q---Lawful puts in way too many chips with presumed KK, I don=E2=80=99t have to worry about qualifying for the low and freeroll and w= in big pot on 6th when he gives up. Crazy Pineapple 8 or better---Lawful all is in with KK, Ihave 88, I river the 4card emergency low (as Kenny described in the voice of Simpson=E2=80= =99s Comic Book Man: Worst. Low. Ever.) to chop pot and prevent him from a double up. Badacey=E2=80=94make six-six against someone. Limit Holdem=E2=80=94knock out Paul T3 over 85 blind vs blind when he very = short. Limit Omaha=E2=80=94Doug and I are heads up for both overall BARGE bragging= rights and the Donkey group side bet. On a J53 board I flopped top & bottom, J53x5 on river, Doug bets out into huge pot that is basically the tournament, I tank and call and I=E2=80=99m good, leave him with crumbs. D= ean Kerl said he noticed I was perturbed when the river came (which counterfeited me). Ended up calling because I was going to be so short if I folded that I was still more likely to win by calling and being right a small percentage of time. Triple Draw Lowball=E2=80=9498762 to win tournament against a very short st= acked Doug who pairs. =E2=80=8B https://youtu.be/04854XqcfCY The tournament ended too soon. I played all 25 games but I didn=E2=80=99t = make it to 25 drinks. Professor Bill Chen/Chris Mecklin TDL 101 quiz: We all know 75432 is #1 (best possible hand or the nuts), 85432 is #5 (the fifth best possible hand), etc. What =E2=80=9Cnumber=E2=80=9D did I win with? Answer: http://pokerworks.com/poker-strategy/poker-variants/deuce-to-seven-triple-d= raw-hand-rankings.html Wednesday was a bit of a bummer day for me. Overtired and cranky and I was admittedly a bit of a dick. I played 4/8 HORSE and lost $75. I went to Main Street Station during happy hour with Ron and Deron and Dave O=E2=80=99Grady for beer and Korean short ribs. I bust the HORSE tournament quickly. I never had any momentum and unlike Tuesday, can=E2=80=99t win that first big pot to propel myself on. Last han= d before break, I have 5(A3) in razz and commit, end up making a seven but Caryl Aronson makes the wheel. Date: Tue, 4 Aug 2015 12:43:28 -0500 From: "C. Meck" Subject: Re: [BARGE] 2015 BARGE Trip Report (Part 1) *2015 BARGE Part 3* *BARGE is a Venn Diagram* My poker life can be described via a Venn Diagram. There is a rectangle that is the space of all poker players. There is a smaller circle within this rectangle that consists of those that like mixed games. There is a smaller circle within this circle that are the mixed games players that are tolerable human beings. This circle has a large intersection with the BARGE circle. The Donkeys circle is largely but not entirely contained within the BARGE circle. The Arrogant Bastards circle is a subset of the BARGE circle and has an intersection with the Donkeys. Hehehe. https://youtu.be/Ddsak-z3Szw https://youtu.be/OimJF5SO46g I played Team CHORSE for the Arrogant Bastards 2 team. Yes, there are so many bastards that there are two teams! There is also a Donkeys team and several other teams that I could be on (DV8s, McLibtards, etc.) So many overlapping circles in our Venn Diagarm. C-Dean H-Karl O-Andreas R-Becca S-me E-Arthur We do decent and qualify for final table. Then we go to Carson Kitchen for lunch. A group of seven including Patrick Milligan, Karl & Shae, Michael Maurer, etc. Great lunch and a group including Nolan and Goldie come in as we are leaving. https://youtu.be/famKsm4uwvs Back to Binion=E2=80=99s for the PLO with lammers tournament, sponsored by = The International Brotherhood of Gobbling Donkeys. I=E2=80=99m actually not mu= ch of a PLO player, but several people are. Oh, Dean Kerl=E2=80=99s at my table an= d he=E2=80=99s a PLO monster. There=E2=80=99s Bree Goldman; she probably was running it twi= ce with her dad before she started school. First few levels: Dean stacks me. Use lammer #1. Dean stacks me. Use lammer #2. Talk of the =E2=80=9CTriple Crown=E2=80=9D and =E2=80=9CGrand Slam=E2=80=9D= . Bree stacks me to end that talk. Use lammer #3. I thought wraps were good PLO hands, but I went 0-fer-3 with them. I should have been the 2nd player out of the tournament, but I put a horror beat on Paul McMullin. If he ever tells you the story and gives you a dollar, let me know so I can reimburse him. Basically, flop comes K82 with 2 diamonds, 1 heart. I have top & bottom pair with backdoor flush draw, Paul has set of kings and front door flush draw. I get there with running hearts. GROSS. Next year, we should have a =E2=80=9CRun It/Rock It Twice=E2=80=9D button that we can use once a tour= nament. https://youtu.be/DEHiwNspBUE Actually ended up playing for several hours after that, busted about 40th to Dean, who doesn=E2=80=99t like to run it twice. Just ask him if you are= ever in a cash PLO game with him! 995 flop, A978 < 95xx to Dean. Final table play was weird since Kenny and Patrick both had all 3 lammers and short stacks and laddered up playing super tight and no one could get too agro unless they either were ignoring ICM and/or were as hammered as Chris Jepsen. I think in the future all lammers have to be exchanged at a certain point, maybe the formation of the final table. Played some cash games. Briefly 4/8 HORSE, but the locals were taking an eternity to make $4 decisions, fuck that. $1/3 NL with Rick, Len, SLB, CKaBWoP, various locals. Get $300 buyin up to $500 when local can=E2=80=99t bet-fold his 99 on a 85x= 58 runout and my A8 (preflop RAI) is g00t. I lose most of it back to an elderly Chinese ipad aficionado when he rivers me somehow (detail lost of how). This guy was super old but did nothing but watch his iPad and verbally put everyone on the stone cold nuts every time he bet. +$55 Friday was the CHORSE final table, symposium, and the TOCament. I don=E2=80=99t have my notes handy so I don=E2=80=99t remember the full ma= ke up of my first table, but I was chipping up in the early levels. I was playing basically every pot Ron was in because I like to pick on him. I won a key pot from Cider: my AQQ4 > his KKxx on KJT board, board did not pair for him. This gets me to double starting stack or a bit over early. Then there was a crazy high variance stud hand with Ron 8(8A) vs his something that I think I chose the checkRAI to 4 bets line on 3rd street, get Lynsy & Scott Byron to fold likely better starting hands than either Ron or I had. Ron makes jacks up to survive his all-in. Then he goes on agro rampage and takes out Scott Byron. I end up back at starting stack. Table breaks, Ron and I end up at same table, I have Ron as my RHO and Andy Bloch as my LHO. I naturally decide after a few (or many) drinks that Andy Bloch is the best candidate at the table for trying to outplay in stud (Note: I=E2=80=99m pretty sure I was wearing my t-shirt that day.= ) I try to steal with Q(xx) where xx is garbage. He doesn=E2=80=99t go for it, I g= et a (xx) QJKK(x) run out where my pair of kings is good. I then bust Andy in limit holdem. He has TT, I have AKs, get in on turn when I have flush draw and 2 overs, river K is enough to win me his blackjack DVD. https://youtu.be/jcyw0OwtGNU Next I earn my Woodchipper merit badge by cracking Bob Ogus=E2=80=99s AA in= limit holdem by rivering a set with 99. Sorry Bob! My note taking gets hazier from there. I did bust Michael Maurer and had 55K (presto!) at symposium break. I was a single this time and sold for a respectable (probably inflated) amount. My tournament game is usually best on Monday/Tuesday and deteriorates through the week. As we got to the final few tables, I completely neglected to take notes or remember hands. I was winning most of the time until Jordan shows up with approximately ONE MIRRION chips and proceeds to take a bunch of mine. Anyways, I=E2=80=99m lucky enough to make the final table (my first multi-f= inal table performance at BARGE!) with about 110K. I think this is the final table arrangement: #1 Melissa Hayden #2 David Croson (had fun chatting with him at previous table) #3 Grizz #4 Mike =E2=80=9CValue Town=E2=80=9D Connors #5 Jordan =E2=80=9CFellknight=E2=80=9D Devenport #6 Derek =E2=80=9CI Only Made Two WSOP Final Tables This Year=E2=80=9D Gome= z #7 Dan Nussbaum #8 George Wattman #9 Tom Bayz I almost immediately get chopped down to about 65K when I lose a hand of limit holdem to Melissa. KTJ6. Bustout hand: Five left. Jordan opens UTG, which he has and should have a wide range. Derek flats. This is surprising and should ring alarm bells. I=E2=80=99m on the button and look down at 55. I ponder for a while (fold = or squeeze-jam) and decide to jam. Melissa and Mike fold from the blinds. Back to Jordan, he counts out and considers for a while and jams. Derek instacalls and has us TRAPPED. Jordan has TT, Derek AA, me 55. Flop is 987 and the turn is a 6, leaving Derek and I (me with idiot end of straight) with 2 outs to chop. It doesn=E2=80=99t happen and I=E2=80=99m out 5th, De= rek 4th (as he had more chips to start the hand). Jordan goes on to win. https://youtu.be/TNH57uvOcU8 I mistakenly though karaoke was over, so went to Nacho Daddy (decent drunk food downtown) with Carol & Jared, Derek, and Mike. Lose $200 cause I was bricking all my draws Andrew Prock made a cameo, he wins with the Woodchipper cause I=E2=80=99m a= pussy and fold my pair of deuces and he show the 99 he snowed with. I honestly almost called. Go sweat tournament for a while. 4/8 Dealer=E2=80=99s Choice at Donkey table Holdem 21 is an interesting holdem/blackjack split-pot game, but I never got to call Duckflush before table broke; y=E2=80=99all might be learning D= uckflush next year! https://youtu.be/mfWH2AVSrww Then 4/8 HOSER to 6 AM (R=3DRazzdugi) Rich, Kenny, Grapes, Wendy, Murray, Frank, David (cool local), eventually Randall when Binglaha broke, couple other locals. Poor Klaus (the German whiteshirt graveyard dealer) had to put up with us as sloppy drunks (someone spilled beer on table) Multiple rounds of Fireball after 3 AM, but Murray isn=E2=80=99t a silly = =E2=80=98Murican child who needs candy-flavored whisky so he drank real Scotch instead like a manly Canuckistani. WhatsApp Chat account (edited) 3:33 AM (me) I beat Kenny in stud AJ9 > AJ8 (not checked down, Kenny: I have ace high, Me: So do I, I got the jack. Kenny: Me too! Klaus figured the rest out for us!) https://youtu.be/eVlRQn6AMYs 3:34 AM (Redbird) Fucking degens 3:34 AM (Doug Grismore) Lol nice 4:14 AM (me) Kenny got me back. Fuck him. (Kenny and I got scooped by an older local in razzdugi when Kenny kept raising when the local had obvious made badugi and then beat my razz hand on 7th, should have berated Kenny the way Orleans regs yell at anyone who raises =E2=80=9Cthe low=E2=80=9D) 5:23 AM (me) Don=E2=80=99t bother flopping a nut nut draw against Omaholic. (huge o8 pot, I flop the world and get CORRUPTED and scooped by Rich) 5:27 AM (me) Kenny is berating the table fish (he was yelling at either me or Grapes) Sunday of course is the wonderful Dealers=E2=80=99 Tournament and the more wonderful Goldman Hangover Partyament. I was rooting for PJ in the dealers=E2=80=99 event (she=E2=80=99s a Thai woman who both dealt and cashe= d in the Masters event at Binion=E2=80=99s earlier this summer that I final tabled and Kluch= won). I was selling toke chips (quarters) for the dealers to tip Paul with. Went to the Goldman=E2=80=99s; great as always and thanks. Highlights incl= uded Cards Against Humanity and gamb00ling on table-top games. I did the equivalent of being dealt 75432 in 2-7 lowball in CAH; the black card was =E2=80=9CWhat does Dick Cheney like?=E2=80=9D and I played a card that said= something like =E2=80=9CFiring a rifle while balls deep in a squealing pig=E2=80=9D. NUTS= ! SHIP IT! Derek had brought over a pretty sweet game called Tsuro that involves flying dragons. Kenny and I bet on the first game (we each got random 4 of the 8 players) and he won. We both played the second game and bet again with teams of 4 (ourselves and 3 chosen randomly). It was HU between Roland (Kenny) and Regis (me) and Regis got me my $20 back! https://youtu.be/nPbmXkmxexM Also heard about a cool sounding stud variant called Super Teddy Ballgame that Steve McLoughlin and Joe Tall described. Idea was to have a game that nines are good in (named after Ted Williams of the Red Sox). Unfortunately I haven=E2=80=99t played it and have already forgotten how it works. Monday was just packing and going home. Did win twice more: CCR against Ron & Kenny at Triple George Grill for lunch (Kenny always pays) and getting no one in middle seat on Southwest flight home on virtually full flight. https://youtu.be/IuLJwuKcKrA Date: Wed, 5 Aug 2015 19:05:07 -0500 From: "C.
