From: "PrestoET" To: Date: Mon, 4 Aug 2003 21:56:57 -0500 Subject: [BARGE] 2003 - Random Notes and thoughts from ET (AKQJT) Dear Poker Friends: Random memories and thoughts barely organized but I wanted to share..... #1 I am getting old. I can not stay up all night and function well the next day. Every year I vow to go to bed at a decent hour and I never do. I did manage to go to bed at 1:30am the night before the No Limit HE event (realize this is still 3:30am Chicago Time) and it was by far my best effort. In order to really enjoy Saturday night's fun, I must leave for home much later on Sunday or better yet go home on Monday. It is hard to have fun when all you can think about is going to the airport hungover in 4 hours. For those that went to the hangover event, I hope you had fun. I am really tired and this note will probably not be as upbeat as it would be if I waited a few days but Peter "Fold'em" told me the one thing I could do to thank him for all his hard work would be to write a trip report so here goes!! #2 Wednesday night - Rich Strauss - good to see you at the Binion's check in counter, sorry I missed you at the airport. R00ling hold'em game with ACTIONBOB, MIKEMCMANUS and many others on Wednesday night! Straddles, double dead straddles, capped pots with 8 way action, wow! Walter Hunt, good to see you again, do you live at Binion's under a table! ;-) Hope to see you at the WSOP again next year! This is the 2nd BARGE during which I have made a straight flush against a local (a recently fired Binion's employee I was told)!! This time the quote from the local is "I think I can still win if the board pairs up", to which I said "I don't Think so!". #3 HOP tournament. I suck, EOS. Lowball and Draw play WAY to slow for me, I was actually getting bored except for the lively conversation at the table. Was dealt numerous sets in draw that never improved and never won the hand. In draw I would get dealt 75421, in lowball I would get dealt A,A,Joker,2,9, draw 2 and get another A and a K. How infuriating!! ;-) #3 For the 2nd time I won a Mirage $25 satellite to the Mirage Thursday night tourney(I think IRC pays dividends for me in these fast paced satellite type events), didn't take the rebuy in the tourney, played well for a couple hours and then completely misplayed a hand against Bingo (nice flush on the river sir!) and another player and lost most of my chips. You are welcome Bingo. All was not lost though, as the roulette wheel, Craps and BJ at the Mirage were all good to me while I waited to see how Grizz (thanks for the ride) would do. Of course later at Binion's I gave ALL of this back and then some to those nice people in the BJ pit but I am sure Binion's can use it more than the Mirage. #5 TOC event. I need to practice my Omaha hi-lo, I think every hand looks like a contender!! ;-) But, I did enjoy sitting with Tom Overton and others. Enjoy the Iraqi playing cards folks! I would comment that the "tradition" of giving a bust out gift seems to have slipped a bit. The CD that John Harkness made looked very nice! #3 The symposium has outlived it's "value" for me in more ways than one. Time is so short for me at BARGE and I would probably skip this if I attend another BARGE. I figure for all the players I have bought at symposiums, I am a little ahead(thank you Bingo in 2001!) but this year was a disaster; as I only cashed on myself and did not even return enough to pay for even that purchase(Bingo and I went for $130 (which I bought) but we only returned $110). So called Professional players have never cashed a single time for me! This year my purchases of Chris Ferguson and Linda Johnson amongst several other BARGE pro's all whiffed. So for me, no Symposium next time although it is an event I would recommend for first or 2nd time BARGERs as it is a good way to meet people and learn a little about "who is who". I would rather get some extra time at the tables, get a good meal or venture out to the Bellagio next time. I just don't get to LV that often. The free drinks would definitely would make it tempting though! It is just too easy for me to select ALL on the BARGE registration site when deciding what to attend, next time I need to give more thought to what to attend and how to spend the time. #6 - The No Limit Event. Thought I played well despite the hand I tried to steal from Marge and managed to suck out on the river and get paid off. My flopped AKQJT ( I think the license was lucky this way!) against Carol was a monster until the board paired at the end and I was leery about reraising all-in so saved 2K just in case I was beat! My pocket AA held up each time but I never got any action except for Sabyl's K9 all-in under the gun bet when she was getting desperately low on chips. The disaster hand for me was my raise with A7 which Socal for some unknown reason felt obligated to call with A2 offsuit and a 2 fell. I think I was the chip leader with about 21 players left and this hurt my stack by about 25%. Win some and lose. My goal was to finish 6th or higher but after this A7 disaster my chips kept getting blinded and anted away as I kept getting 9 4 off and K 8 off and then we were down to 11 of us and all of a sudden I was the short stack. I finally took a stand in the BB and could have tripled through if AQ could just somehow find a way to beat pocket 8s. Enjoy the license plate Goodwin. ;-) In retrospect, I can not figure out if this was a good call or not, considering the size of the pot, my short stack and my desire to finish higher than 6th it probably was the correct call.....but taking it from another angle, I probably should not have called an all-in bet from Goodwin and waited for a hand that I could raise. I hated losing on this hand( I hate AQ) but since I was the shortest stack at the table after going card dead for an hour or so I think it was the best move. Maybe someone else that was there at the table or watching could comment. I had no desire just to make the final table and finish 10th for the same $200 so I still think it was the correct call. I think the blinds were something like 1500 and 3000 with 300 antes at the time but I am not sure. I had maybe 10- 11K before the ante and BB. Comments/analysis welcome. One final word on the NLHE, this is a question for Paul Person,,,,,,early in the tournament I bet into you on the flop with a board of KQ9 and you went all-in from the button. This all in bet totally shocked me since I expected you would fold. I made what I thought was a huge lay down on this hand after flopping 2 pair, Qs and 9s. Did you have me beat?? I still am not sure. I saw you win more uncontested hands that you NEVER showed down, you started to resemble that player on the WPT broadcast! Great table image sir and congratulations on your victory! # 6 Banquet. This has never disappointed for me and this year was the tops. The meal was very good(thanks Binion's!), the free drinks tremendous(premium pour!, thank you Paradise), and as usual I thoroughly enjoyed the guest speaker. Thank you to Binion's, Howard Lederer and everyone else that made this event a success. Nolan - Nice job as "mc" and love your enthusiasm. I thought the standing ovation for Nick Behnen and other dignitaries showed how classy BARGERs can be! Oh and let's not forget the Playmate!! # 7 It was great to see old faces, meet some new faces this year and good to see some new folks from the Chicago area make the trip. Carol - congratulations on your 9th place finish, I was jealous of all your chips! It was also a pleasure to get to sit at table 3 with Sabyl and others for an extended time. The hospitality suite was nice and enjoyed chatting with Jester and Lee Jones and many others of you during BARGE...many others whom in years past were mostly names and people I recognized but with whom I never had an opportunity to chat. Now I feel like I know many of you a little better and had some of the same feelings that Patti expressed. John Moser - thanks for bringing me the water when we got down to 2 tables, you are very kind and I *was* very thirsty! #8 Let's not forgot our playmate and free goodies from Pokerstars and Paradise Poker and Quiotix Technologies. Fabulous! Many thanks! #9 Plusses - Binion's comped my room and my flight was paid for by miles. Minuses - All the money I dumped in the Binion's pit! Hah! No wonder they comped my room when I asked! ;-) #10 I have a few photos to share if someone has a site, let me know and I will email them. Thanks again to everyone involved in making BARGE the best yet! I am sure I should have thanked many more people and mentioned others and I apologize for those of you that I missed. I wish you all good health and good fortune in the coming year. All the best. With warm regards, Paul "ET" White P.S. Bingo - Sorry I did not finish higher in the NLHE, I know I promised I would come in first but it just wasn't too be I guess. I'll have to redeem myself at the WPO! I loved your story about the dealer rolling the dice and security coming down, that is a BARGE classic if I ever heard one! The Gaming Board people must have been going nuts!! if they have such a thing in Las Vegas. ________ Thanks to PokerStars, Paradise Poker, and Quiotix Technologies for their generous sponsorship of BARGE 2003. After I bet all in I wanted to take it back fearing JT. But being relatively short stacked, if I was going to raise, it had to be all in. I thought if I just called, you would put me in on the turn anyway, and I didn't think I could improve without giving you a better boat. At that stage I was pretty much only playing big pairs. I remember folding pre-flop AK and AQ when it came to me with a raise, and even JJ once when it came to me with a re-raise (by QQ I think it turned out to be).
